CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it’s part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions

if CGI animators unionized, it would kill the MCU. straight up. the the entire business model is built on exploiting CGI animators

Since July is Disability Pride Month

just a reminder - do NOT boycott streaming services or not watch new things. the unions have not called for one for a reason. for one, it affects residual payments, which as minimal as those currently are, actors are still getting them during this time, and for two, studios will use lack of viewership as an excuse to cancel shows because you are showing them there is no demand. it deeply affects the industry the writers and actors stand to come back to once the strike is over

TLDR; don’t give tumblr money until they start making visible improvements towards accessibility

I’ve seen a few posts around about something people are calling crab day where you’re supposed to gift the crab button to your mutuals to support Tumblr financially. Please don’t participate in this unless Tumblr starts making noticeable improvements towards accessibility between now and then. It’s been 5 months of me trying to get the bare minimum of accessibility for photosensitive users or even just find out who I can talk to to get anywhere, and Tumblr is refusing to make any changes.

@photomatt has doubled down on the suggestion that you should just pay for ad-free or install an ad-blocker instead of listening to any of the suggestions photosensitive users have repeatedly made. Please do not give money to Tumblr until they show a commitment to accessibility because they will continue to ignore our requests if it doesn’t impact them financially.

Some of the requests we’ve made are:

1. Allow us to disable autoplay on browser as well as the app. This is an accessibility feature, not a data-saving feature, and should be treated as such.

2. Include ads in disabling of autoplay, along with other formats that currently get around the autoplay feature. Currently even if you have autoplay disabled you can still end up with flashing lights in your face every few posts from ads.

3. Improve the reporting process for strobing ads. The quick reporting process doesn’t provide good options to ensure the person reviewing the report realizes that it’s being reported for flashing lights so you have to hope they agree it’s either malicious or offensive and don’t just brush you off as abusing the report function. The more complicated reporting process involves getting a screenshot and the link that the ad brings you to, which requires lingering on the ad, which if you’re trying to report the ad for your safety, is dangerous. You can also still get the same ad 10 times a row after reporting it until it’s been reviewed. Which again, presents a danger to users.

4. Add a community label for flashing lights. Flashing lights are commonly untagged or mistagged, even sometimes maliciously. It would be extremely helpful to the photosensitive community to be able to add a warning to a post that doesn’t have one.

I’ve talked a lot about the photosensitive community in this post because that’s what I have personal experience with and what @photomatt has explicitly come out and just said to buy ad-free about, but there are definitely other accessibility issues that need to be addressed as well (like the alt text function needing improvements to make it accessible to users who need it and don’t use screenreaders, or the fact that a lot of tumblr official stuff still doesn’t seem to use the alt text feature themselves). Please feel free to add on accessibility issues I’ve missed in the reblogs.

Also the crab day thing was started by an aggressively transphobic pro-life christian Conservative so maybe listen to disabled people instead of transphobic Christian conservatives, people.

As far as accessibility issues goes I’d also like to add that the new image viewing features are incredibly aggressive for people like me who have issues with hand eye coordination, It’s become really difficult to zoom freely and easily and also it’s way too easy to accidentally swipe into another video because of motor coordination issues and nobody wanted that feature anyway so it’s fucking stupid to have added it @staff please fucking listen to disabled people and fix your shit.

every day I get on here and see some post going “do not make an account on ZYLPPHONE, the hot new social media! it turns out making an account gives the creators (who are nazis) instant access to your bank account and also causes your pets to explode!” and this is all very baffling to me because I cannot believe anyone is actually fucking around with new social media platforms that shit sounds exhausting. if tumblr ever gives up and goes all the way under I will simply turn into a crab and go back to the sea you will not be finding my on zylophone

Help fight for Florida abortion access!

Attention, fellow workers of Florida! Florida has a chance to help defend healthcare and bodily autonomy, but the organizers of this petition need your help!

From the website for Floridians Protecting Freedom:

“Floridians Protecting Freedom (FPF) is a statewide campaign of allied organizations and concerned citizens working together to protect Floridians’ access to abortion as reproductive health care and defend the right to bodily autonomy. FPF recognizes that all Floridians deserve the freedom to make personal medical decisions, including about abortion, free of government intrusion.”

For people who are new:

I am a (very good! shockingly good!) coffee company that donates all its profit to charity. But it turns out “I” functions oddly in that sentence, because corporate social media presences are not actually sentient; instead, companies are made of people, even if capitalism attempts to elide the essential humanity of coffee and other products humans consume.

Anyway, companies are made out of people, and this company’s tumblr is made out of author and vlogbrother John Green. It’s simple, really: I am a company who is a person who is me who does the marketing for the awesome coffee club, which provides you with the world’s best coffee and donates all its profit to reduce maternal and child mortality in Sierra Leone.

p.s. Occasionally I am not a coffee company. Occasionally I am a person who answers questions about my books or other work. Other times, I am a sock company. Like the rest of us, I contain multitudes.

This refusal to mask to protect lives reminds me of how that one old timey surgeon was like “hey I noticed that mortality rates go down when I wash my hands between handling corpses and delivering babies, maybe try it?” And he got treated viciously and shunned by the entire medical field because “a gentleman’s hands are always clean” like by default so they shouldn’t have to wash them.

And just this obvious but often unspoken idea that contagion can never be spread (and definitely not seriously suffered) by someone who thinks of themself as like inherently “pure” and how these ideas link up with white supremacist and ableist/eugenicist concepts of who is “dirty” and who is considered pure/clean by default even without cleaning themselves (and how Calvinist predestination never really left us and people think they’re “good” because of their own special essence rather than what they DO) and like who generally gets blamed for widespread contagion and how those who are ill long term are suspect and are either fakers/exaggerating/“using it as an excuse” or deserve to suffer somehow or both and how all this cognitive baggage makes it possible to see thousands dead every week and decide that’s not a big deal

Which is a lot of why anti masking started with christofascist white supremacists!!

Anyways if you consider yourself a leftist or like even a decent person you should back that up with your actions!!

Be willing to put up with literally just looking a little weird, that is the lowest cost you’ll probably ever pay for potentially saving human lives and I’m sorry but if you let your feelings of AWKWARDNESS get in the way of living by your principles you need to suck it up. I have intense social anxiety and it is not a good reason to refuse to take the most basic precautions for a deadly and disabling illness.

That’s assuming you HAVE principles and value human life… Idk maybe you kinda believe that your convenience is worth more than other people’s survival because you see anyone who might get very sick or die as part of an out group that you can’t bring yourself to care about!

And if that’s the case you need to work that shit out bc I’m sorry but it’s shitty of you to see the world that way and you can do better.

“No one is more dangerous than he who imagines himself pure in heart: for his purity, by definition, is unassailable.”

Before pride month is over

I love being bisexual and I love being bi4bi

Orientation-wise, I wouldn’t want to identify any other way, and I don’t think I’d be willing to date a monosexual ever again.

I’ve got some other identities in LGBTQIA+, but being bi is the one that means the most to me and I’ll never shut up about it.

UPS has reached an agreement with the Teamsters union to equip its iconic brown delivery trucks with air conditioning for the first time for new units.

The agreement, announced by UPS on Tuesday, comes as the delivery giant and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters negotiate the terms of a new contract for more than 330,000 U.S. employees. (source)

Unions work, unionize.

They only just now got air conditioners?!?!?!

Yeah it’s a huge win. Those trucks are death traps on a good day. A bunch of drivers died and more got severely ill last year from heat stroke. The temperature in the back of those vans is usually 10 degrees hotter than outside. It’s terrible, and I’m so proud of my union for how harshly they’re negotiating right now. We’ve got a bunch of smaller consessions already but this one was big.

This round of negotiations is difficult. The UPS Overlords are trying very hard to keep their billions of dollars in three pockets instead of spreading the wealth we (the workers) earned for them during the pandemic’s influx of home delivery. They’re trying to give us as little as possible and spinning the news articles to make it look like they’re super generous. Meanwhile almost everyone in my warehouse is on food stamps cuz we aren’t paid shit.

The UPS Teamsters Union are currently voting on whether or not to go on strike in August, so prepare for that. Stock up on essential supplies, just in case. We’ll let everyone know how to support us when the time comes.

This job is my first time being part of a union and I never wanna go back to not having one. It’s amazing to have so much fighting power.

capitalism will work it’s people to death if it is legally allowed to do so

it’s good to see unions fighting back against that
